Maraia - Swimming lessons Term 1

 Swimming lessons Term 1

Last tuesday we started doing swimming lessons. I was very excited to go swimming because I don't go swimming a lot. On the next day I was freezing cold but after a few minutes the sun started to come back out. When we hopped onto the bus to go to the pools, we noticed that the bus smelt like quarine I don't like the smell of quarine. After the bus ride we walk inside and then a lady lead us to the pools and I was really cool there was a gym on the side, and if you keep on walking there was another gym. When we got there we changed into our swimming clothes then we waited for the other class to come out and change then we went into our lanes. When we got to our lane we had to sit on the wall and put our had on the side of us and twist into the pool to enter safely, then we just learnt backstroke and how to float on our back, then near the end we got to jump in the pool which is the best part

The pools we went to was called Swim Magic I personally think it great, Here is a link - Link to Swim Magic Website

If you don't know what a DLO is, well it is a google drawing with some key words, pictures, and information about what you are write about. I did my DLO on Okahu Bay because a few weeks ago we went sailing at Okahu Bay, and learnt how to set  up a sailing boat and thing you need to do when sailing. One thing that we found out when we got there was that the school didn't pay for the sailing trip becasue, we were choosen by St. Johns Rotary Club, and they had paid for our trip.

Maraia - Planting Plants

 Planting Plants

It is now Term 2 but in the school holidays before we visited our Aunty and uncle down in Opotiki, Whakatane. We also went down there to see our baby cousin Jiosese ( How to say it - josese). the first few week we went fishing alot and I always said to my "Don't go into the water", but somehow I ended up going back to the house wet. After the first week all my cousins left, only me and my Grandmother stayed another week. after the day they left my aunty went to do some gardening and she gave me some little seedlings like the ones from countdown to plant. Then the next day we went fishing early in the morning around 8 or 9 I think with my uncle. It was a bit chilly out so my aunty stayed with Jiosese until 10 then they came out to the beach. They live in a holiday home and it is also by the beach so there is a gate and when you open it you just have to follow the path and you are a the beach it is less then a minute walk. Then when they came down to the beach my grandmother came back from her walk on the beach. Whenever we go fishing my uncle brings 2 fishing rod and when my Grandmother got back, one of the fishing poles got tugged so  she went to reel it in, and when she was reeling in the fishing line the other line got tugged so the I ran to it and reeled it in and we both caught a fish.

Check out the photo of our fish and plants!

Learn - I can identify trees by looking at the bark
Learn - I can identify native New Zealand trees by their leaves

Today in TWP we learnt more about plants and how to identify plants and trees, by their leaves and barks. Our teachers gave us a paper of what the leaves of some New Zealand native trees look like, we had find the name of the trees online. Then after we finished that we were given another piece of paper that has picture of what the bark on the tree looks like then we had to find the name of the tree. We had finished it all but there was one tree left but it was blurred so we couldn't find the name of what is looked like so we asked the teachers and they just told us the answer because it was blurred for them to and then they told us it was a fern tree.

Maraia - Our Sailing trip - Volvo Sailing Have A Go

Our Sailing trip - Volvo Sailing Have A Go

Last week on Thursday TWP 4 and Mr gaffneys Yr 5s went sailing. For sailing we had to come to school in mufti with our swimming clothes underneath. When we got there we had to sit by the boat on the chairs then after a few minutes we were aloud to play or eat I decided to go and play banana split.

After a little while the Yr 5s got into the boats the Yr 6s had to go second, so while we where waiting our Teacher Mrs Nees Kirua took us to the beach. It was a minute walk or less but while we were walking my friend Aston hit my head so I chased him and slapped his head and we kept on doing that to each other until we got to the beach. When we got closer to the beach I ran ahead and we for the water, but we couldn't go in because we were still in our clothes so I rolled my pants up  because our teacher said we can only go up to our knees.

After a little while we went back to the dock and played games. Then the Yr 5s came back to shore and got changed into their normal clothes.

Later we went to get into out life jackets and then we had to go into the water. After a little while we had a race but I didn't know what to do to control the sail. Then an hour later one of the instuctours came on a speed boat and threw out plastic play balls and we had to get as many as we could, whenever me and Melenaite (my partner) saw a ball we went to it and I leaned over the boat and got the ball. Later on there were no more balls so we counted our and we got 18 the after a few seconds someones boat fell over then if started to get cold so I jumped in to water so I could get warm and then I saw the balls that fell out of the boat that got tipped over and I swan towards it a got some so we then had 21 balls.

We then we back to shore but when we went back to shore the same boat tipped over so we left them and another instructor called Holly came and helped them.

Then we all got change and went back to school.

Photo Time.

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, 50 days before Ascension
On Thursday of the week that followed Palm Sunday, Jesus had his last meal with his apostles.
The day after his last supper Jesus was put to death on a cross on Calvary Hill.
Jesus lay in a tomb for 3 days and then God raised him up.
After his resurrection Jesus showed himself to his friends and some of them did not recognise him.
He spent time with his apostles and told them he was going to return to his Father.
50 days after Palm Sunday Jesus was taken by God to share his glory in heaven.
Because Jesus entered heaven in glory he made it possible for his followers to do the same.

Maraia - Mother's day mass

Mother's day mass

Today we had a very special mass. We were celebrating Mother's Day early. Some mother's came and celebrated with us in mass.

In class this week we made our very own Mother's Day cards. First we folded a red cardboard paper in half, then we made a heart out of a to stirps of paper and then glued the bottom of a stripped paper onto the front of the card.

When then we shaped the two stripped papers into a heart we quilled paper and then glued the strips or quilled paper inside the heart. The we let our cards dry for one day.

Here is what I wrote

I appreciate my mother because she always helps me with my work.

I know my mum loves me because when I am sad or angry she will give me hugs.

I love my mum because whenever I make a decision she supports me

This is a picture of all our cards

Maraia - Te Arapū Māori, the Māori alphabet

Te Arapū Māori, the Māori alphabet

Today in TWP4 we did a extra for experts activity.
We learnt about the Māori alphabet (arapū) is made up of eight consonants, five vowels and two digraphs. Digraphs are two letters that combine to form one sound.
Oropūare and Orokati means Vowels and Consonants.
Something I found out is that when a letter has a hat or a macron you have to drag it.

Maraia - Oropūare and Orokati, Vowels and Consonants

Oropūare and Orokati, Vowels and Consonants

Today for Maori we refreshed our memories about the Maori alphabet by learning all of the letters again and by a song.

The Maori Alphabet ( Arapu ) is made up of eight consonants, five vowels and two digraphs. Digraphs are two letters that combine to form one sound.

I really liked doing this activity plus it was really easy to do because we already knew part of it. we had to know the difference between long vowels and short.

Hope you enjoyed - Ko te tumanako i pai koe
